here are my notes from the Naos disaster preparedness workshop!
What to do before an earthquake:
1. Set up outside contact with family & friends outside of California. (The earthquake will likely hit the entire state. phone lines/electricity will be cut off, so make sure you& your family have a common contact outside of the state through whom you can communicate through. Same with between your friends/roommates)
2. Set up a plan with close friends regarding where to meet/report to in the case of an earthquake.
3. Physical items you must have:
- At least a month’s worth of food and water: The average person drinks 2 liters of water/day. (It took the government 2 WEEKS to get water to ppl after hurricane katrina. California is a dessert.) Food and water ie. water barrels and water totes (talk to Joe Kim), Costco 6lb cans of beans for $3, ER food bars/Mainstay Bars.
- Emergency backpack containing: one extra set of clothing for warm weather, 2/3 bottles of water, a little bit of food, first aid kit, LED flashlight with extra batteries, AM/FM battery operated radio
- Next to your backpack have: a sleeping bag and a tent/tarp
- ALWAYS have a whistle on you— put it on a carabiner or your keys
During the earthquake
If you are INSIDE: Drop, Cover, Hold on
- get under a STURDY table and hold on to table legs
- Triangle of life (ie. roll off the bed and lay horizontally against the side of the bed so that things are unlikely to fall on you.)
- Keep away from windows and glass
If you are OUTSIDE:
- Stop
- Stay away from tall buildings/poles/electrical cords
After the earthquake:
- If you are trapped under rubble, cover your mouth/nose w clothing, use a whistle to get attention, but don’t shout
- smell for gas leaks if you are inside a building. if you smell gas get out immediately.
”The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether.
They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them Your servant is warned;
In keeping them there is greatreward.” Psalm 19: 10-11
